Cedar County Communities for Kids

Cedar County Communities for Kids was established in January 2022 in response to the lack of quality early childhood opportunities for young children within the county. The population according to the 2020 census was 8,483. The county includes these 15 communities: Belden, Bow Valley, Coleridge, Constance, Fordyce, Hartington, Laurel, Magnet, Obert, Randolph, St. Helena, St. James, South Yankton, and Wynot.  Currently, there are two (2) licensed childcare centers, three(3) licensed Family Home I child care homes, and four(4) licensed Family II child care homes in Cedar County. The current maximum capacity for the existing licensed child care homes (Family I/Family II) is 76 children. The current maximum capacity for licensed child care centers is approximately 78.

The Cedar County Communities for Kids is driven by a volunteer group of 12 citizens from all parts of Cedar County.
